Fashion Crush and Woman Power: Leather bags by Okhtein

We discovered this beautiful brand on CNN.
Okthein is:
beautiful designs, handcraft, color, woman power and Africa. We love !

Egyptian design duo siblings Aya and Mounaz Abdelraouf launched their brand Okhtein – meaning, appropriately, “sisters” in Arabic – because of their vision to bring true luxury back to their home country as well as drawing international attention to the inherent refinement of Egyptian artisanship, sensing a gap in the market for true luxury accessories produced in Egypt. Launched in 2013, Okhtein seeks to set new trends, promoting Egyptian artistry as well as presenting new designs to the world.

Luxury leather goods made in Stellenbosch

I first came across the goods of «Freedom of Movement» in 2014, when the brothers Léan and Roal only just started their new brand. The former students in Stellenbosch wanted to boost the local economy through job creation and skill empowerment, so they just kickstarted their own company.

Their fabulous leather and canvas bags were sold at «Present Space»  in Cape Town's Kloof Street where I discovered them. After contacting the guys and asking what they think of exporting to Switzerland, they were more than happy to do so. Lucky us!

This is how FOM desribe themselves:
Fiercely passionate about their beloved South Africa, the Chartered Accountant and Civil Engineer resolved to boost the local economy through job creation and skill empowerment. Our own highly skilled and talented artisans design and handcraft our leather products in our factory in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Our methods are based on the traditional principles of leather craftsmanship, utilizing the same tools that have been used to create authentic leather goods for decades. This is then blended with our own more modern techniques to ensure that our production process is not only efficient, but that our products are of the highest quality that can only be achieved by true artisans.

So we feel very lucky to present «Freedom of Movement» in our online shop. You can find the products in the bags section: Right here.  Happy shopping!

We are very excited about this new brand at Highlightmyday !

LALESSO IS A LUXURY AFRICAN FASHION AND LIFESTYLE BRAND. IT SUPPORTS ENTIRELY TRANSPARENT, SUSTAINABLE, ECO AND ETHICAL PRODUCTION FACILITIES IN KENYA AND SOUTH AFRICA. CO CREATORS ALICE HEUSSER AND OLIVIA KENNAWAY SEEK INSPIRATION FROM THE VIBRANT EAST AFRICAN KHANGA CLOTH IN THE PRINT RICH DESIGNS. THE EXCLUSIVELY SUMMER LABEL ENGULFS AN EFFORTLESS SENSE OF FREEDOM THROUGH IT’S CLASSIC YET UNIQUELY DISTINGUISHABLE SILHOUETTES.

Alice and Olivia are children of Africa and have been wrapped in its mesmerising fabrics since birth. Having met whilst studying Fashion Design in Cape Town, the pair were inspired to start Lalesso after travelling to the remote Island of Lamu in the North of Kenya where the coastal Swahili women adorn the khanga cloth with a unique vibrancy and graciousness.

Don't miss ! Dada Afrika at Rietberg Museum in Zurich

The exhibition Dada Africa is timed to coincide with this year’s Dada centenary.
It will be the first anywhere in the world to be devoted to the Dadaists’ preoccupation with non-European art and culture. The sensorially explosive “Soirées nègres” at Cabaret Voltaire used a variety of artistic genres to attack artistic conventions and traditional values.

Why do we sell design made in South Africa?

1/20/2016

Comments

The answer is simple: Because we love handcraft and the creativity behind every single piece. We love that the objects reacitvate and intensify our memories linked to this beautiful country and its people. And furthermore, we have always an excuse to go back and meet up with these awesome people :-).

Like Caroline did this month in Cape Town with Thandie from nomihandmade. Thandie creates handmade jewellery, home décor and accessories crafted from authentic shweshwe fabrics. Shweshwe is a printed dyed cotton fabric used for traditional Sotho (South Africa & Lesotho) clothing. Check out some of her beautiful jewelry in our shop. By the way... but shhhhh.... don't tell anyone... the model in our shop wearing Thandie's creation is Caroline herself.

I stayed back Switzerland... poor me... well... yes and no... because if I didn't, I wouldn't have met lovely Donna! She's the Trade Manager at Mungo. Mungo textiles are designed, woven and made in South Africa. South African from start to finish. Donna stopped in Switzerland on the way to Paris, where she presents Mungo at the Maison&Objet trade show. Want to see what Mungo products look like ? Click here!

Furthermore, handsome, young designer Florian T. came by the shop to present his new "jewelry-babies". Each necklace and bracelet represents a city Florian loves. Such as... Cape Town for instance! You'll find his creations here.

ZÜRICH KAUFT EIN

HIGHLIGHT MY DAY

Nein, nein.
Wir waren nicht obdachlos.
Im Gegenteil. HIGHLIGHT MY DAY war zu diesem Zeitpunkt
an der Motorenstrasse 14 im Kreis 5 zu hause.

Bild

könnt Ihr also physisch an der Josefstrasse 144 in 8005 Zürich bestaunen.
Und deshalb sind wir dank DOTTI'S im Shopping Guide "Zürich kauft ein".

P.S.
Darf ich vorstellen ? Die Mädels hinter DOTTI'S

Bild

P.P.S.
That's me !
Nicht der Hase ! Hinter dem Hasen !
